Sponsored Membership Program

The sponsored membership program allows individuals from developing countries who could not otherwise afford an ASM membership to obtain one with full benefits.  ASM members will pay the dues for sponsored members.  There are two types of sponsored memberships.  One is a personal relationship between an ASM member and a colleague in a developing country.  In this relationship, the sponsored member is chosen by the ASM member who then pays the dues each year.  This is an open-ended relationship.  The second type of sponsored membership is managed by the International Relations Committee (IRC).  Potential members may apply directly about obtaining a sponsored membership or may be recommended to the IRC.  After reviewing the potential member, sponsored membership may be conferred.

Details

Usually sponsored membership is an online-only membership (members receive Journal of Mammalogy but not printed copies); however, in some instances may be a regular membership, especially if internet access is limited for the sponsored member.  Any citizen of a developing country is eligible (that is someone from any country other than the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Australia, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, or Taiwan).  Normally such sponsorship is conferred for three years on younger individuals who have shown a high level of contributions to mammalogy but a person of any age may be sponsored.  Sponsored membership confers full benefits of membership in the ASM, including online access to our publications, Journal of Mammalogy and Mammalian Species.  For details of membership benefits, check  our Membership Benefits page.

The responsibility for the dues may be taken on by an ASM member personally, but usually dues are paid each year from a pool of contributions which is managed by the IRC. Carol and Jim Patton Award

for Outstanding Latin American Graduate Students of Mammalogy

The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM), through its International Relations Committee, seeks to promote growth of mammalogy in Latin America along with encouragement of connections between ASM members and Latin American mammalogists. In that spirit, ASM offers the Carol and Jim Patton Awards to one outstanding graduate student from each of the affiliated mammal societies in Latin America. Each award is funded by a generous gift from Carol and Jim Patton, who value the importance of supporting young mammalogists in Latin America.

It is the responsibility of each participating Latin American mammal society, at the time of the society’s regular meeting, to provide the ASM International Relations Committee with the name and contact information of an outstanding graduate student selected based on criteria established by each society, for example, the best graduate student oral presentation. The Carol and Jim Patton award will consist of three consecutive years of membership in ASM, providing access to numerous benefits, including reduced fees for publishing in Journal of Mammalogy and for attending ASM meetings, access to research and travel grants for student members, and an on-line subscription to Journal of Mammalogy.
