WHEREAS, many large mammals are especially vulnerable to habitat loss resulting from improper land use and to over-hunting; and
WHEREAS, some undisturbed populations must be maintained for the purpose of scientific investigations and rational resource management developed from it; and
WHEREAS, the existence of such undisturbed populations in association with other critical elements of the ecosystem cannot generally be guaranteed outside of adequate recognized conservation areas;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists supports and endorses the concept of Ecological Reserves as developed in the Canadian Arctic under the auspices of the International Biological Program in Canada.
