WHEREAS, the habitat of the Lowland Gorilla is limited to certain districts of the Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic and Republic of the Congo; and
WHEREAS, need for absolute protection of this species in at least one national park or strict nature reserve was recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in its eighth general assembly at Nairobi in 1963; and
WHEREAS, a concerted support of this conservation need appears desirable,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists supports the IUCN in its recommendation that each country take necessary measures as soon as possible to afford this species absolute protection in at least one reserve of a size adequate to the purpose.
