Worldwide: tropical, warm-temperate, or cold temperate waters of the north Pacific. It has been recorded as far north as the Gulf of Alaska. North Atlantic and southern Oceans: cold-temperate waters.
Notes
Their distribution is closely linked to their preferred prey, squid. A strong El Nino event in 1982-83 brought on major changes to the ecosystem off the coast of southern California. These whales avoided the area for much of the following 10 years. It
