Holarctic in tundra, northern taiga, and grassy meadows. In Palearctic, from Fennoscandia across N European Russia and Siberia to Kamchatka Peninsula and borderlands of Bering Sea; south through the Baltic region, N Kazakhstan, transbaikal region, N Mongo

Notes

Active day or night. Eats green vegetation in summer; stores seeds and roots for winter use. Lives in low-lying tundra, wet meadows and marshes.
