WHEREAS, the region of the upper Usamacinta River along the Mexican and Guatemalan border includes some of the largest expanses of undisturbed tropical forest in North America; and
WHEREAS, this area provides a refuge for a remarkably diverse Neotropical fauna and flora of unusual scientific interest; and
WHEREAS, 3,312 square kilometers of this area has been designated as a conservation reserve (Zona de Proteccion Forestal) by the Federal Government of Mexico;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists highly commends the Federal Government of Mexico for this farsighted action in the interest of conservation.
