George Omondi Paul is a recent recipient of an African Graduate Student Research Fund award from ASM. Using this award, George was able to make significant progress on his studies of tick-borne diseases in livestock (cattle) and native wildlife (buffalo) in Kenya. In addition to collecting blood samples from a large number of animals, George used genetic analyses to assess the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in cattle from areas with and without buffalo. This project, which has important implications for livestock management in Kenya, forms the basis of George’s Master’s Thesis, which he is currently completing at the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
The African Graduate Student Research Fund was established in 2014 to support students who are citizens of African nations as they pursue graduate research in mammalogy. Two awards ($1500 each) are made per year. As one of ASM’s newest graduate funding opportunities, the AGSRF is still actively building the principal that supports these awards.
